e. Training aids should be used as much as possible; this may
include model airplanes, mock-up cockpit trainers, aerial pattern
charts, and the chalkboard/whiteboard.
f. After both the instructor and the student know exactly what
will be covered on the flight, the instructor shall brief a plan
to achieve those objectives. The plan should consider the
required maneuvers, available working areas and local weather,
and should include the specific sequence of maneuvers. This plan
is essential for the successful completion of each flight event.
g. The last part of the brief should be an open session to
give the student an opportunity to ask any questions.
h. For simulator events the ATJ shall not be referred to while
the instructor is inside a multi-place simulator.
i. Flight duty officers (FDOs) shall provide a safety of
flight brief to each SOLO SNP and, in the case of field carrier
landing practice (FCLP), this brief shall be given by a
designated carrier qualification (CQ) instructor.
607. DEBRIEF. The student cannot always tell or remember
exactly how he/she has performed by the comments over the
intercommunication system (ICS). It is therefore necessary to
conduct a comprehensive debrief.
a. Debriefing must be done in private. This does not mean in
the aircraft unless the instructor is required to remain in the
aircraft for a subsequent flight, or walking from the line. It
should be conducted in a designated area where no distractions
can interrupt the necessary privacy. Group flights may be
debriefed together; however, individual performance not related
to the group flight should be done privately. Unsatisfactory
events shall not be debriefed in the aircraft.
R)
b. Debriefing must be detailed and comprehensive. The best aid
to attaining this is proper use of the kneeboard in flight. This
gives the instructor an accurate source of information for the
debrief and filling out the ATF. The ATF shall be completed as a
part of the debrief for every event. Exceptions may be made for
cross-country flights away from home station information system
support and for LSO grades during FCLP and CQ, however the intent
is that a student is entitled to complete feedback on performance
as soon as possible following the flight event.
c. The instructor should take advantage of the appropriate
training aids. After the maneuvers have been adequately covered,
the instructor should consider student problem areas. It will be
necessary at some time to motivate the student along certain
lines. This can be done by assigning extra instruction or
homework assignments. Students may also need some motivation
toward earning their wings. Every student may become unmotivated
or pessimistic at some time or another, and the instructor must
