BASIC FIGHTER MANEUVERS (BFM)

The three attack scenarios will be detailed in this section:

High yo yo.

Flight path overshoot.

Valid attack to guns-D.

*Each defensive scenario will be initiated from the perch position:

Defense/Perch PADS:

P - 45 Bearing

A - Defender: 14,000 feet; Attacker: 15,500 feet

D - 3/4 NM

S - 250 KIAS

Once PADS parameters are achieved, the standard "Speed and Angels" call from each IP will be

made. The defensive scenarios will be initiated by the defensive IP with a UHF "Fight's On"

call. The offensive IP will echo: "Fight's On" (similar to a neutral engagement). The defensive

student will immediately initiate defensive maneuvering by directing a hard turn into the threat:

Defensive student: "Hard Right, Bogey Right Five" or "Hard Left, Bogey Left Seven."

In each defensive scenario, the offensive aircraft will begin its attack with a roll-in off the perch

towards the defender. As the attacking aircraft proceeds through low reversal (to align

fuselages), the defensive student will analyze the offensive aircraft's attack and respond

accordingly with directive ICS commands to his pilot. The attacking bogey will fly one of the

following three profiles:

High Yo Yo Defense

This scenario will simulate an attack by a bogey that initially attacks with excessive closure and

corrects with a high yo yo (out-of-plane maneuver). Out of the low reversal, the attacker will

threaten the defender with its nose. The defensive student will honor this threat with a "Nose

On" ICS call to his pilot. A "Nose On" call will initiate a harder turn into the threat. At some

point after the low reversal, the attacking bogey will initiate a high yo yo as an out-of-plane

maneuver to prevent an imminent overshoot. As the bogey begins his high yo yo with a roll to

wings-level and pull out of plane, the defensive student will call "Nose Off, unload" on the ICS.

The "Nose Off" call will direct the defensive pilot to ease the turn as the attacker's nose is not

immediately threatening.

Easing the turn will enable the defender to regain energy depleted during the hard initial

defensive turn.
