FAMILIARIZATION FLIGHTS (FAMS)
CHAPTER FOUR
4.  With ATIS copied, the IP will initiate PC checks. Once again, the PC will signal, "hands
out." It is essential to remain hands out during the duration of the PC checks. Upon
completion of the PC checks, note the battery amps. If the battery is taking a long time to fall
below 125 amps (required for the second engine start) the OUI will obtain the flight clearance.
Once the battery has recharged (indicated by the amps < 125 amps), the IP will signal the PC and
start the #1 (left) engine. During the start sequence, the student monitors engine instruments and
the PC for abnormal start indications. Upon a successful start on the #1 (left) engine, the IP will
turn on the left generator and the NO. 1 GEN OUT caution light will extinguish. At this point,
the student will take command of the ADF, TACAN, and compass.
409. FINAL CHECKS
Before the PC conducts the final checks, both crewmembers arm the ejection seats by removing
their respective pins.
IP (ICS): "Pulling pins."
STUDENT (ICS): "Roger, pulling pins."
Both crewmembers will remove the upper and lower seat pins as well as the canopy jettison pin.
(The fourth pin, the aneroid bell pin from the side of the seat, was removed during preflight).
Once all four pins are stowed securely in the map case, both crewmembers will report on the
ICS:
STUDENT (ICS): "Four pins pulled and stowed."
IP (ICS): "Roger, four pins pulled and stowed."
The IP will then signal the PC to remove the chocks and then taxi the aircraft forward a few feet
for a brake check. The final checks are then conducted during which time both crewmembers
remain "hands out."
NOTE
This is an ideal time to review the Instrument Checklist since most
items can be checked visually while keeping hands out of the
cockpit.
Once final checks are complete, the aircraft is ready for taxi.
410. TAXI PROCEDURES
When the IP starts to taxi, the student will switch the TACAN to transmit, receive, and call
"outbound" to Base:
STUDENT (UHF): "Base, ROKT 204 outbound."
