Turn To Abeam
After dive recovery, at an attitude of 10 above the horizon, the IP will apply MRT, roll to 60
AOB, and initially apply 3 - 4 Gs to reach the abeam position. During the turn, the aircrew will
have to locate their interval (the aircraft immediately preceding them in the pattern). Procedures
in the event you cannot locate your interval are given later under "Safety." After 90 of turn, the
aircraft will be flown to arrive at the abeam position on altitude and airspeed.
Abeam Position
The abeam position is a point abeam the target. When abeam, the target will be off the wingtip
and the aircraft heading will be the reciprocal of the run-in heading. The distance abeam the
target will be approximately 2 NM.
The abeam call will be made right after the aircraft behind you makes their "Off safe call". If
your position is not at the abeam, an appropriate call such as "Approaching abeam" or "Past
abeam" will be made on UHF. The abeam call is designed to give the aircraft coming off target
instant interval situational awareness.
