1005. TURN SEQUENCES/ AREA MANAGEMENT
On BFM 1 the instructors will demonstrate one sequence of five engaging turns, consisting of
one of each of the five turns: TAC Into, TAC Away, Inplace Into, Inplace Away, and Cross
Turn. On BFM 2 through BFM 6, each student will direct a turn sequence as lead. The objective
of these turn sequences is to perform one and only one of each of the five turns while
simultaneously maneuvering the section towards the center of the assigned working area. All
turn sequences will be initiated on a cardinal heading. The lead student will call one set of five
turns, a lead change will be performed, and the wing student, now temporarily acting as lead,
will direct the second set of five turns.
For example, in Area 1 (refer back to Figure 10-1) the flight should enter the area at Beard (NPA
210/28). Normally a turn to the nearest cardinal heading will be made (180 in this example).
The two turn sequences, therefore, will be conducted in a manner that displaces the section
towards the center of Area 1: the NPA 220/40. To facilitate this, three possible "turn sequences"
have been developed that will give the section the expected geographic displacement:
1. ICITT (Inplace, Cross, Inplace, TAC, TAC)/Designed for lateral displacement of the
section.
2. TICIT (TAC, Inplace, Cross, Inplace, TAC) Designed for down-range displacement of the
section.
3. "RUNNING THE CARD" (TAC, TAC, Inplace, Inplace, Cross). Conducting this
sequence will result in minimal geographical displacement of the section. The turns are
conducted in the order presented on the BFM brief card hence the term "running the card."
