T-6A FORMATION
CHAPTER SIX
605. LOST SIGHT
Lost sight in formation is a very disorienting and potentially dangerous situation. The two main
objectives after losing sight are Separate and Communicate. Procedures and associated
communications are listed below for various situations (use your "Tactical Call Sign" when making
calls.) Both aircraft shall conform with the procedures below to ensure separation. Once separation is
attained, Lead will coordinate with ATC for a VFR join-up or separate IFR clearances.
1.
Inadvertent IMC (VFR clearance) - Straight and Level (S&L)
WING (W) - Transition to an instrument scan immediately and turn 1/2 Standard Rate Turn (SRT) away
from the lead for 30 heading change for 30 seconds. Communicate with Lead. When directed by Lead,
turn another 150 in same direction (away from Lead.)
LEAD (L) - Maintain S&L for 30 seconds after Wingman separates. Turn SRT away from Wingman to
reciprocal heading and communicate with wingman. After proceeding to a reciprocal heading, the
formation should visually acquire each other as they return to VMC conditions.
Example of communications:
W:
"(Tactical Call sign), lost sight" (W is turning 1/2 SRT away from L)
L:
"(Tactical Call sign) copies, heading XXX"
W:
"2"
"(Tactical Call sign)-2, heading YYY, hack" (YYY is 30 past XXX)
W:
L:
"(Tactical Call sign)"
L
. . . after 30 seconds: "(Tactical Call sign)-2, you are cleared right/left turn to heading ZZZ"
(ZZZ is the reciprocal heading of XXX)
W:
"2"
2.
S&L on IFR Clearance
WING - Transition to instrument scan and turn 1/2 SRT away from Lead for 30 heading change for 30
seconds. Communicate with Lead. After 30 seconds, reverse back to Lead's heading.
LEAD - Maintain heading and altitude and reply to Wingman communications while being directive
when applicable. Advise ATC and coordinate for a separate clearance for the Wingman for either a VFR
join-up or separate RTB.
Example of communications:
W:
"(Tactical Call sign)-2, lost sight" (W is turning 1/2 SRT away from L)
L:
"(Tactical Call sign) copies, heading XXX"
