CHAPTER TEN
aircraft crosses the gun bore line. The shooter can execute either type of attack, though the pull-
through method is a better choice for high Angle-off, minimum range shots like the Snapshot drill
sets up. The primary advantage of this method is the higher aspect (AOT) shot the technique
permits. The lower bullet density and poor BFM follow-on options are the major disadvantages of
the pull-through attack.
To summarize, in all cases the shooter will need to get on the same plane of motion, within gun's
range, and "squeeze the trigger" with enough lead to have bullets hitting the defender when they
cross the shooter's nose. Basically, the shooter should pull inside the target's turn and be in-
plane with the target.
NOTE
If it appears as though the shooter will be violating the "135 max
Track Crossing Angle (TCA)" or "1000 foot min gun shots"
training rule, then either aircraft can call "Skip it" and the shooter
aircraft will maneuver to effect a safe pass and the drill will
continue following the reversal. Standard knock-it-off procedures
apply.
RTB
Upon completion of all BFM maneuvers the flight will RTB in accordance with standard section
procedures. Course rules to a low break will be the standard BFM sortie recovery. Section
visual straight-in or instrument approaches may be utilized if weather conditions dictate.
1010. BFM-2
Overview
BFM-2 will introduce the student to basic engaging turns and offensive fighter maneuvering.
Scissors maneuvers, basic flight flow, perch set-ups, and "game plans" will be introduced.
BFM-2 will conclude with 1V1 engagements initiated from a neutral abeam start.
BFM-2 Conduct
Standard BFM administrative procedures will be conducted on BFM-2. Once established in the
assigned working area, the section will execute:
1.
Engaging Turns (2 sets, one by each student.)
2.
Snapshot drill.
3.
Perch set-up.
4.
Offensive Maneuvering Exercise (initiated from the "Perch" position.)
