CHAPTER THREE
First, canceling IFR tells the controller you can maintain your own traffic separation. Do not
cancel automatically if you are uncomfortable with the visibility. Second, the controller will
give you vectors to the initial until you report it in sight. To allow the controller to stop giving
you vectors, tell him you have the initial point in sight.
Once at the initial and on Tower frequency, communications are identical to those discussed in
Chapter Two under VFR arrivals.
320. HOLDING
Whenever an aircraft is directed to a fix other than a destination airport and delay is expected, it
is the responsibility of the ATC controller to issue complete holding instructions (unless the
holding pattern is charted), an EFC time, and best estimate of any additional enroute/terminal
delay.
Example
SNFO/SWSO:
"Atlanta Center, KATT 820, estimating
Monroeville at 1557, 6000, request TACAN
RWY 21 approach, with negative ATIS."
ATC:
"KATT 820, Atlanta Center, unable to approve
your request at this time due to traffic. Hold east
of Monroeville on the 090 radial, current Monroe
County weather is 900 foot broken, 2 miles
visibility with light rain, altimeter 30.06. Time
now 1550, expect further clearance at time 1620."
SNFO/SWSO:
"Atlanta Center, KATT 820, hold east of
Monroeville on the 090 radial, altimeter 30.06,
expected further clearance at time 1620."
If there is published holding depicted, the controlling agency will generally direct you to hold as
published.
Example
SNFO/SWSO
"Pensacola Approach, KATT 820, 4000,
information C, request the TACAN R 7L NPA,
full stop."
ATC:
"KATT 820, Descend to 3500, cleared direct to
the NPA, direct SYDNY. Hold as published.
Time now is 1550, expect further clearance at
time 1620."
