| CHAPTER THREE
SNFO/SWSO VOICE COMMUNICATIONS
This is usually the TACAN approach but may be VOR or ILS approach. It is necessary to have
the published instrument approach plate available during all GCA approaches. If
communications are lost during the GCA approach:
1.
Attempt to contact the controller from another radio, frequency, crew position, etc.
2.
If unable to reestablish communications:
a.
If VMC, fly visually to the field.
b.
If course guidance is available from a backup approach, transition to the approach.
If the weather is not VMC and no backup approach is available, execute the missed approach
procedures provided by the controller before communications were lost.
On touchdown, the controller will inform you to contact Tower. The call is the same whether
you just shot a PAR or an ASR.
Example
SNFO/SWSO:
"Sherman Tower, KATT 813, GCA rollout (on
the left/right)."
319. BREAK
Coming into the break has already been discussed for VFR arrival. Many fields that are not
Navy facilities refer to the break as "the overhead." Initial check-in with approach control to
request the break is identical to a TACAN or GCA initial call.
Example
SNFO/SWSO:
"Pensacola Approach, KATT 813, 9000,
information MIKE, request course rules, full
stop."
Or:
SNFO/SWSO:
"Pensacola Approach, KATT 813, 9000,
information BRAVO, request the overhead, full
stop."
IFR aircraft arriving via a VFR approach must cancel their IFR clearance before being permitted
to shoot the VFR approach:
SNFO/SWSO:
"Pensacola Approach, KATT 813, cancel IFR, PT
X-RAY in sight."
