Introduction to Radio Instruments
COMMON ERROR: Using too large heading change to
correct to course and chasing the localizer FAC.
e.
Start clock at FAF if timing depicted
f.
Maintain descent
g.

DH
(1) Transition to out-of-cockpit scan at DH if runway/field
environment in sight
(2) Execute missed approach if runway environment not in
sight, or you determine that a safe landing is not
possible
3.
Scan
a.
Maintain course and glidepath
(1) Use azimuth deviation bar and CDI to maintain
localizer course
(2) Use glideslope deviation bar and GS pointer to
establish glidepath
b.
Monitor attitude and performance instruments
(1) Cross-check VSI, A/S, and AOA
(2) Monitor barometric altimeter for decision height (DH)
COMMON ERROR: Fixating on the azimuth and
glideslope deviation bars while neglecting attitude and
performance instruments.
COMMON ERROR: Fixating on azimuth and glideslope
deviation bars, and thus dropping altitude out of scan and
descending below minimums.
