CHAPTER SIX
2. Descent: Change both altimeters to the local altimeter setting once beginning a descent
through 18,000 feet.
NOTE
If given an intermediate level-off prior to reaching 18,000 feet, remember
to reset both altimeters to 29.92."
TURNPOINT CALLS
In order to help you stay ahead of the aircraft and develop good crew coordination habits, there
are 3 required calls you will make centered around each of the turnpoints along your route of
flight.
1. TWO-MINUTE PRIOR CALL: A two-minute prior call is made over the ICS when the
air craft is 2 minutes prior to the last updated ETA of the next turnpoint.
If you are radial tracking with DME, there are 2 options for computing the two-minute prior
point.
a.
If GS is known, use the GS (in miles per minute) and multiply that number by two to
determine the distance you will be 2 minutes from the point.
b.
Use the previous point's actual time of arrival (ATA) plus your preflight estimated
time enroute to the next point.
If you are flying a point-to-point, there are 3 options you have for figuring the two-minute prior
point:
a.
If your GS is confirmed, use the clock to determine the point.
b.
If your course cuts across a VOR/DME or VORTAC at roughly right angles, you can
convert distance to radials and use a crossing radial to confirm your two-minute prior
point.
c.
Use the previous point's actual time of arrival (ATA) plus your preflight estimated
time enroute to the next point.
The two-minute prior call is:
a.
"We are 2 minutes prior to ___________"
b.
"The outbound heading is _____ for a course of ______"
c.
"ETA to ________ is _______"
