Example: "Rocket 205, cleared direct to the Navy Oceana TACAN 120 radial at

29 DME, hold Southeast on the 120 radial, 10 mile legs, left turns. Maintain FL 190. Expected

further clearance 2120Z."

In this example, four holding patterns can be drawn at the assigned radial/DME fix as shown in

Figure 3-5.

The student can determine the correct pattern by the process of elimination:

Because the instructions state, "hold southeast", the two patterns to the Northwest may be

eliminated. This leaves us with two pattern possibilities as illustrated in Figure 3-6.
