| CHAPTER NINE
BASIC FIGHTER MANEUVERING (BFM) THEORY
BFM Theory Summary
A solid understanding of the basic aerodynamic maneuvering principals is essential for success
in the BFM arena. In the fleet, additional knowledge of an adversary aircraft's E-M capabilities
will further determine the tactics a fighter crew will utilize to gain an advantage.
With an understanding of the basic principals, offensive and defensive BFM procedures will be
introduced. During the 1V1 engagements the basic BFM principals and performance tradeoffs
will become apparent. A clear understanding of the material presented in this chapter may well
make the difference between being a shooter or a target.
