(12) To lower the gear:
(a) Lead gives the preparatory gear signal (Appendix A) and receives an
acknowledgment from the Wingman.
(b) The signal to move the gear handle will be a single exaggerated head nod
forward. Both pilots will then perform the Landing Checklist.
(c) After completing the Landing Checklist, the Wingman will look over
Lead's aircraft and then give Lead a thumbs-up, indicating that Lead's gear is down and Lead's
aircraft looks good. The leader will do the same and reply with thumbs-up.
(13) The forward/stacked high position is defined as:
(a) Leading edge of the Wingman's wing aligned with the trailing edge of
Lead's horizontal stabilizer (fore/aft position).
(b)
Allow ten feet of wingtip clearance minimum (left/right position).
(c)
The Leader's helmet on the horizon (up/down).
b. Common Student Errors
(1)
Lead:
(a)
Not flying a smooth approach and flare.
(b)
Using too rapid a throttle reduction in the flare.
(c)
Not placing the Wingman on the upwind side.
(d)
Not maintaining own side of the runway.
(e)
Too rapid use of BETA.
(2)
Wingman:
(a)
Not moving to the stacked forward/high position.
(b)
Not flying formation through touchdown.
(c)
Failing to rapidly move the throttle to idle.
(d)
Slow to engage BETA.
(e)
Not calling "BETA" on the runway.
(f)
Not maintaining own side of the runway.

FORMATION LANDING RESTRICTIONS
a. Full runway length available.
b. Total crosswind component must be less than 10 knots.
c. Dry runway.
d. Minimum runway width is 100 feet.
