MOTIVATION
Tactical aircraft were forced down to the low level environment

with the invention of Surface to Air missiles. As a student Naval
Low-Level Mission
aviator in advanced strike training you are learning the basics of
tactical aviation. Development of specific tactics for a particular
type of mission are constantly updated and improved to keep
pace with new technology and to defeat enemy defenses. Even
with improvements in technology, the goals and requirements of
flying these missions remain the same. You must be able to
navigate to a target within a specific time window, drop your
ordnance, and egress to friendly territory. The mission is
paramount, whether it be destruction of a target, photographic
and return safely, you must avoid detection from enemy
defenses.
Technology has enabled your aircraft to extend their operational
capabilities beyond the restrictions of night or adverse weather.
Even the best equipment, is subject to failure and no enemy
nation will provide you with a convenient TACAN/DME fix or a
VOR to help you get to your target. You must therefore, be
ready to carry out your mission using dead reckoning techniques
(time, distance, and heading) to update position referencing
geographic checkpoints.
The Operational navigation flight procedures, therefore, are an
important segment of training for strike pilots. The purpose of
this training stage is to introduce mission planning and chart
interpretation for use in low level operational missions.
