Operational Navigation Flight Training Instruction
Wingman is the only one who can execute high cover. Lead (low aircraft) will never go to high cover (he
must proceed and recover at his planned altitude.) Use the "knock if off" call for any emergency
situations. Maintain at or above recovery altitude until the lead is in sight. There is no requirement to
cross the target so turn to egress immediately. To execute the high cover, maintain MRT! With the lead
in sight and across his extended six o'clock, get your nose down to accelerate and project your nose to
attain bearing as quickly as possible.
SUMMARY
Road recce is one of the most fun stages in the training command. The combination of weapons, tactical
formation and operational navigation are a unique challenge along with your first experience leading a
tactical section. Study the route and the FTI thoroughly, practice the communication calls with your
wingman and visualize what you will see. Game out different situations in the attack and off target phase
so you have a plan to react to changing situations. Above all, learn and have fun!
