CHAPTER TWO
1.
Initial Contact - The tower call is initiated automatically in the hold-short area when ready
for takeoff. Aircraft shall not cross the hold-short position without specific clearance from
Tower. The following format shall be used to contact Tower for a VFR departure.
Example
SNFO/SWSO:
"Sherman Tower, BUCK 711, takeoff, VFR."
2. Tower Instructions - There are four possible instructions that Sherman Tower may give to
an aircraft that has requested takeoff. These instructions shall be read back to the Tower :
a.
Hold-Short - Not cleared onto the runway. Hold your position prior to the hold-short
line.
Example
TOWER:
"BUCK 711, hold-short Runway 7 Right."
SNFO/SWSO:
"BUCK 711, holding short Runway 7 Right."
b.
Position and Hold - Cleared to taxi across the hold-short line and into takeoff
position, but not cleared for takeoff.
Example
TOWER:
"BUCK 711, taxi into position and hold runway 7
Right."
SNFO/SWSO:
"BUCK 711, position and hold 7 Right."
c.
Taxi Across - When using dual runways, cleared to taxi across the inboard runway in
order to utilize the outboard runway.
Example
TOWER:
"BUCK 711, taxi across 7 Right, hold-short 7
Left."
SNFO/SWSO:
"BUCK 711, taxi across 7 Right, hold-short 7
Left."
d.
Cleared for takeoff - Cleared to taxi onto the runway and depart.
Example
TOWER:
"BUCK 711, wind 090 at 8, cleared for takeoff,
runway 7 Right."
SNFO/SWSO:
"BUCK 711, cleared for takeoff 7 Right."
