BREAK TURN EXERCISE DEFENSE
The purpose of the defensive break turn exercise is to practice defensive maneuvering against a long-
range missile shot and a guns firing solution. There is no difference between this and the exercise you
read about in the offensive section except that you are the defensive aircraft. As shown in Figure 18, the
section is in combat spread with the simulated bogey attacking from your 6 between the section, and
spotted by the lead (instructor).
After you receive the call to break, respond with a 19-21 unit AOA break turn into the simulated missile.
The lead will simultaneously initiate his nose-high roll into you. After you complete 45 degrees of turn, the
lead will call for you to ease your turn, simulating the missiles defeat.

Figure 18: BREAK TURN EXERCISE DEFENSIVE
Maintain an easy turn until the bogey calls his FOX-2. Then, assume the roll of the defensive fighter.
Execute a break turn and continue to pull and defend against both the bogey rolling in on you and his
subsequent high and low yo-yos.
