CHAPTER NINE
BASIC FIGHTER MANEUVERING (BFM) THEORY
Additionally, it is important to expect that some out of plane maneuvering may be required to
control range and closure.
A non-cooperative bogey will aggressively maneuver to deny the attacker a shot. The goal of the
defender will be to create an overshot scenario and regain positional advantage.
Overshoots
An overshoot is most often the result of an attacker's mismanaged positional advantage (i.e.,
excessive closure). There are two types of overshoots: 3 - 9 overshoots and flight path
overshoots.
3 - 9 Overshoot (Wingline): The 3 - 9 line is defined by the line drawn between the wings of an
aircraft. A 3 - 9 overshoot occurs anytime an attacker flies from aft of the defender's 3 - 9 line to
a position forward of the defender's 3 - 9 line. This may also be called "flying out in front". In
Figure 9-19, aircraft (A) illustrates a 3 - 9 overshoot.
Flight Path Overshoot: A flight path overshoot occurs any time the attacking aircraft flies through
the defender's flight path (i.e., defender's extended 6 o'clock). Aircraft (B) in Figure 9-19
illustrates a flight path overshoot.

Flight path overshoots can be further categorized into two types:
1.  The first is a control zone overshoot. This occurs when the attacker crosses the defender's
extended six, aft of the forward edge of the control zone. With this type of overshoot, the
defender will maintain his current turn direction in order to maintain sight and deny the attacker
